Rascallion Vinyl Collection 45 RPM 2016

Boogie nights.

Rascallion Wines is owned by experienced wine marketer Ross Sleet and the Kretzmar family of Broad Valley with Johan Joubert, previously of Kleine Zalze and Boland Kelder, making the wine. The Chenin-led Vinyl Collection 33 1/3 RPM 2017 (R118 a bottle) rated 90 on the 100-point scale in the Cape White Blend Report last year and so was keen to taste the companion red blend 45 RMPM 2016 (R133 a bottle).

Grapes from Piekenierskloof, it’s a blend of 36% Grenache, 32% Cinsaut, 26% Mouvèrdre and 6% Tannat (alcohol: 13%). The nose shows red fruit and spice with some floral fragrance in the background. The palate meanwhile is marked by lovely fruit expression and soft tannins – serve from the fridge and it’s an easy-to-like summertime quaffer.

Editor’s rating: 88/100.
