Revenge of the nerds.

Revenge of the nerds.

Geeks like to scoff at Sauvignon Blanc for being excessively simple but while Reyneke Reserve White is entirely from this variety, the fact that it is made according to biodymanic principles, the wine undergoing spontaneous fermentation in barrel means even the obsessive wine enthusiast has been known to drink it.

The 2013 shows lime, white peach and blackcurrant plus a vague yeasty note in the background. It’s rich but balanced by zippy acidity.  The fruit concentration is startlingly good and the mostly new oak seamlessly integrated – it’s really broad in the mouth but still has verve. A super wine but probably not for the uninitiated. Liquorcity Claremont price: R158.90 a bottle.

Score: 92/100.
