Reyneke Reserve White 2014

Particular.

The Reserve White 2014 from biodynamic producer Reyneke in Stellenbosch is 100% Sauvignon Blanc, winemaking involving spontaneous fermentation and maturation involving nine months in 300-litre barrels, 100% new before three months in foudre and two months in tank.

It shows white peach and some yeasty complexity and carries its oak very well. It’s more subtle and refined than the standard label 2015 (reviewed here) but I’d describe it as finely honed rather than intricate. Wine Cellar price: R180 a bottle.

#WinemagRating: 90/100.

Vinimark have been involved in Reyneke since the mid-2000s and thanks to their investment have allowed Reyneke to go from strength to strength. One of their first releases of Reserve Red, the 2008, received 5* in the Platter guide so I doubt they will “screw it up” given their track record. If anything they have merely provided distribution channels and investment and have let Johan and the winemakers have control over the production, farming and wine-making.

It’s almost always sad when a big corporation swallows up a great producer like this. The bottom line beckons… let’s hope they don’t screw this up!
