Rust en Vrede Estate 2007

Takes no prisoners.

Takes no prisoners.

The Estate 2007 from Stellenbosch property Rust en Vrede was all “shock and awe” last night and I liked it despite myself.

A blend of 61% Cab, 30% Shiraz and 9% Merlot, it has an abv of 15% as stated on the back label. Pitch black in colour and a gorgeous nose of red and black fruit, attractive oak spice, some leafiness, oyster shell and incense. The palate meanwhile was overwhelming – super-rich and full with good grip but undeniably hot on the finish. Very little decay in evidence but lacking in refreshment. Imperious rather than charming.

Score: 90/100.
