New releases of Duncan Savage’s own label wines just out. Tasting notes and scores as follows:
Savage White 2013
A blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon, the latter up to 44% from 30% in the case of the 2012. Winemaker Savage is concerned that it is still very tight but I think it’s already showing wonderfully. Lime, tangerine, peach, blackcurrant and some white pepper in the background. Lovely creamy texture offset by zingy acidity. Really characterful with concentrated fruit but also some leesy funkiness.
Savage Red 2012
A Rhône-style blend which includes Mourvèdre in addition to the Shiraz, Grenache and Cinsaut that the 2011 had. Very aromatic on the nose – red and black fruit, fynbos, spice and a touch of earthiness. The palate is nicely fruit driven with moderate acidity and rather soft tannins. Very approachable if a bit short of detail. Lacks the precision and poise of 2011.
