The Shiraz Select 2003 from Stellenbosch property Saxenburg was rated 5 Stars in the 2007 edition of Platter’s and it remains a pretty smart bottle of wine. Matured for 24 months in all new oak, equal parts French and American, it contains small percentages of Cab and Merlot.

The wine currently shows red and black fruit, spice and white pepper plus a subtle maltiness on the nose. It’s rich and broad on the palate, initially appearing sweet fruited before an olive brine quality sets in. The alcohol by volume is stated as 15% on the bottle and it could be argued that it could do with a bit more freshness but conversely it has presence, even a quite gravitas about it.

Score: 92/100.
