The Shannon Vineyards Merlot 2011 made exclusively for Woolworths at R129.95 bottle is a decent drop but it’s a few degrees off Mount Bullet, this Elgin property’s top-end example of the variety.
Made by Catherine Marshall, it was subjected to less oak and comes in at 13.5% abv compared to 14.5% for the Mount Bullet of the same vintage.
More red fruit than black and a subtle maritime quality. Medium bodied with bright acidity and fine tannins. Clean and correct but for a wine sitting well over a R100 a bottle perhaps a bit short of heft and complexity.
