The 2012 vintage of Sunbird Sauvignon Blanc from Simonsig placed among the winners of the FNB Sauvignon Blanc Awards Top 10 as well as winning double gold at Veritas and the 2013 vintage has just been released at R65 a bottle.

Whereas the 2012 was a blend of 73% Stellenbosch and 27% Darling grapes, the 2013 sees 51% Stellenbosch and 49% Darling grapes used. For me, the new vintage is not quite as pretty as its predecessor. There’s plenty of lime and green melon flavour, but the texture is a bit too thick and there’s an impression of sweetness not sufficiently offset by acidity.  My guess is all at Simonsig were a little too eager to repeat the success of the 2012.

Score: 86/100.
