Ripped.

All the wines in the top-end 21 Gables range from Spier are designed to ravish rather than seduce. Tasting the current-releases again yesterday, I thought the Chenin Blanc 2013 was the most successful.

From Tygerberg grapes, it has an abv of 14.5% and was matured for 14 months in 400-litre barrels, 75% new. On the nose, citrus, white peach, some spice and not too overt vanilla. Plenty of fruit concentration here but also lively acidity ensuring balance while there’s a nice savoury quality to the finish. A statement wine which pretty much works. Price: R139 a bottle.

Score: 92/100.
