Springfield Special Cuvée Sauvignon Blanc 2001

Golden oldie.

After I recently posed the question as to when top SA white wine drinks best on Twitter, Jenna Bruwer, who handles sales and marketing for Springfield in Robertson, promptly sent me a bottle of the property’s Special Cuvée Sauvignon Blanc from the 2001 vintage.

It proved interesting drinking. The predominant character on both nose and palate was one of honey but there were still hints of lime, green apple, herbs and green pea. Extraordinarily well preserved although you wouldn’t say it had gained much extra complexity in bottle. One of the measures of great wine, however, is the ability to mature with benefit and I’m not sure the industry as a whole opens enough old bottles to really have a fix on the matter.

#WinemagRating: 88/100.

I think we drink out white wines far too young in SA – perhaps out palates are calibrated to enjoy primary character. I recently had the 2010 Cellar Foot Harslevelu and it’s only just starting to drink really nicely. Saving the last bottle for 2020.
