Well assembled.

Last night, dinner at Grande Provence for the announcement of the Top 6 Méthode Cap Classique as well as the Top 6 Sauvignon Blanc as featured in the December/January issue of Classic Wine, the magazine published by Gauteng music station Classic FM. I was commissioned to write an article on Klein Constantia so hence my attendance.

Top six Méthode Cap Classique are:
4½ Stars
Ayama Blanc de Blancs 2008
Lourensford Brut 2008
Meerendal Blanc de Blanc 2007
Môreson Solitaire NV

4 Stars
Perdeberg Brut Reserve NV
Sterhuis Blanc de Blancs 2009

Top six Sauvignon Blanc are:
5 Stars
Kumkani 2010
Steenberg HMS Rattlesnake 2011

4½ Stars
Hoopenburg The Guru 2012
Shannon Sanctuary Peak 2011
The Innings 2012 (Rietvallei)
Trajan Totus 2009

I was somewhat nonplussed by the line-up of bubblies bar the Môreson Solitaire which I thought was very good as an example made in a clean, fresh style (the Lourensford was not available).

As for the Sauvignon Blanc on show, I found the Kumkani (from Darling grapes, made by Nicky Versfeld) extremely big and rich, the sort of wine which would bowl most panels over, while the Steenberg HMS Rattlesnake 2011 is indeed accomplished although shy of 5 Stars for me. Shannon Sanctuary Peak 2011 is a serious offering, The Innings a pleasant but straightforward quaffer, the Totus over-developed and The Guru very plain. Gotta love blind tastings.

Hi Christian. As a non Sauvy drinker, I was quite disappointed by the Sauvy’s. I expected more Blanc fume which I believe is a non entity, under rewarded category in South Africa wines. Like you said, got to love blind.
