Anytime, anywhere.

Anytime, anywhere.

The challenge for wine marketers is how to move wine away from being the special interest of a particular few and towards popular culture. Steenberg in Constantia have launched a new product which features 1) bubbles, 2) easy-to-understand Sauvignon Blanc , 3) funky packaging and 4) is relatively attainable at R95 a bottle.

The Sparkling Sauvignon Blanc, which was bottle fermented and spent three months on the lees, is intended to be “Prosecco-style”. Neutral on the nose, there’s lime and green apple on the palate. It’s neither excessively sweet nor dry, the acidity moderate and the bubbles soft and frothy. Sprite for grown-ups.

Score: 83/100.

I am not normally one for these kinds of easy drinking wines. But we cracked a bottle on Saturday around the time the Sharks were scoring their first try and I must say it tasted top notch. I think Steenberg is onto a winner here – it reminds a little of the Cape Jazz from Solms Delta. A wine you can sit under a tree and drink a case of.
