Stellenrust 49 Barrel Fermented Chenin Blanc 2013

Boom!

Boom!

The Stellenrust standard label Chenin Blanc 2014 placed among the winners of the Standard Bank Chenin Blanc Top 10 Challenge last year but what of the Super Premium 49 Barrel Fermented 2013?

The changing number on the label indicates vine age and the wine underwent spontaneous fermentation, this taking seven months to finish, the wine left on the lees for a futher two months.

It’s a big impact wine. Citrus, peach and apricot plus waxy, yeasty notes plus honey and a little spice. It’s super-rich but there’s also really vibrant acidity. I found it quite hard work – one of those wines you admire rather than adore. Vino Pronto price: R146 a bottle.

Score: 90/100.
