Old gold.

Old gold.

“If Veritas is the wine equivalent of the Currie Cup, then the International Wine and Spirit Competition is the World Cup,” was the recent memorable remark of Maryna Strachan, editor of Wine Extra, the IWSC’s media partner in South Africa.

Stellenbosch property Stellenzicht obviously think the IWSC is pretty important as its currently boasting about getting gold (equivalent to a score of 90 to 94 on the 100-point scale) this year for its Rhapsody 2007.

A blend of 56% Shiraz and 44% Pinotage, it spent 22 months in new oak, 67% French, 22% Hungarian and 11% American. It shows plums, cherries and the forest floor character which comes with development. Big and chunky with hard acidity, I found it old school in style and running out puff.

Score: 86/100.
