Sterhuis Astra 2008

To infinity and beyond.

Astra 2008 from Sterhuis in Stellenbosch is equal parts Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc and Sauvignon Blanc, fermented and matured in barrel for 18 months, 65% new. A quirky blend, the three different varieties seem to be in somewhat awkward juxtaposition if not entirely at odds with each other. Plenty of different flavours including lime, lemon, peach and honey as well as some leesy character and oak-derived vanilla but these don’t necessarily form a seamless whole. Overall, it’s rich and full but there’s also punchy acidity. A demanding, somewhat unyielding wine which still manages to impress. Score: 16.5/20.
