Kirstenbosch Summer Concerts
As Time Magazine said in 2007 “‚at its best the city [Cape Town] offers a relaxed blend of African ethnicity and culture ‚ and nowhere does that harmony look, or sound, better than at the summer concerts at Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden”. There is almost nothing better than packing your own picnic, selecting a bottle or two of your favourite wine and heading out to the gardens for a world-class live concert.
22 January
Artists: Dan Patlansky /Natasha Meister
To achieve legend-status as a Blues-musician at the age of 30 is almost unheard of. What Dan Patlansky can do with a six-string Fender Stratocasterat at this young age, most critically acclaimed guitarists will never quite achieve in a lifetime.
Twenty year old singer ‚ songwriter Natasha Meister will join Dan Patlansky for this performance. She has become SA’s very own Blues Queen in the two short years since returning from Canada to her ancestral home in Africa.
Tickets Adults: R80; Youth (6 – 21yrs) with ID: R55; Botanical Society Members with card: R70
29 January
Artists: Jimmy Dludlu / Claire Phillips
Jimmy Dludlu has come a long way from that moment when at the age of 13 he first picked up a handmade guitar. He taught himself to play and went on to become a global jazz icon. Long before record companies were aware of his talent, he was already celebrated as one of the most stylish talents on the South African jazz music scene. He composes his own music and makes the kind of jazz music that stirs the soul – clearly influenced by various cultures around the continent and his interaction with other musicians on the world stage.
Claire Phillips will perform an opening act at this concert. As a singer- songwriter and musician, Claire’s repertoire spans jazz, funk, soul and folk. She plays the guitar, piano, saxophone and drums, but her acoustic guitar is her instrument of choice. Claire Phillips was the first musician in the country to win a SAMA Award for a debut album.
Tickets Adults: R100; Youth (6 – 21yrs) with ID : R75; Botanical Society Members with card : R90
The Old Mutual Summer Sunset Concerts take place at Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden (Rhodes Avenue, Newlands, Cape Town) on Sundays from 17h00 ‚ 19h00. Gates open at 16h00.
