Sxollie

Get your hustle on.

Sxollie cider was founded in 2014 by Karol Ostaszewski and wife Laura Clacey, who previously had a cider business in Australia. Apples are sourced from Elgin and the production process takes eight weeks: Juice is fermented in tank with Champagne yeasts before bottling and carbonation.  Of interest is that the two ciders in the range are single varietal, the first from Golden Delicious and the second from Packam Pear.

The Golden Delicious has aromas of yellow apple and honey before a palate which appears quite sweet, the bubble quite soft while a yeasty note lends interest. Perhaps a bit short of “bite” but definitely more interesting than the big-brand versions out there.

The Packam Pear shows an attractive floral note as well as a touch of honey. It’s less sweet and has brighter acidity and a touch more savoury on the finish than its counterpart. Approximate retail price: R30 a bottle each.
