The Chocolate Block 2014

Top of the heap.

When The Chocolate Block becomes available at the fairly modest store that is Woolworths in Klipfontein Road, Rondebosch, then you know market domination is almost complete. According to the front label of the 2014 that I acquired, production amounts to the equivalent of 1742 barriques and retail price was R199.95 a bottle so as has been pointed out before (see here), a nice little money-spinner.

The 2014 is a blend of 73% Syrah, 12% Grenache, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Cinsaut and 1% Viognier. The nose shows red and black fruit, a little maltiness, spice and some floral character in the background. The palate is full bodied and flavourful with moderate acidity and smooth tannins. Thanks to a savoury finish, it stops just short of being ingratiating.

#WinemagRating: 89/100.
