Fleur du Cap Bergkelder Selection Noble Late Harvest 2009

Fleur du Cap Bergkelder Selection Noble Late Harvest 2009

Of the Five-Star rated wines in Platter’s, the red and white that receive the most positive votes from the judging panel are named Wines of the Year. Fleur du Cap Bergkelder Selection Noble Late Harvest 2009 is this year’s White Wine of the Year, and while it is an undoubtedly excellent example of a wine from grapes infected with noble rot, it might be more useful in future to have Best Red, Best White and Best Sweet (unfortified or fortified).  So much of a great Noble Late Harvest is dependent on the role played by botrytis rather than site or winemaking ability and so it seems a little perverse that the niche category of Noble Late Harvest should win out over all the others. By the same token, South Africa makes cracking good sweet wines so why not recognise these too?
