Mount Bullet 2008 from Elgin property Shannon Vineyards is the only example of Merlot to achieve Five Stars in Platter’s 2011, and the first to achieve the guide’s ultimate accolade since Thelema Reserve 2003 did so in 2006.

There were two other wines nominated but not endorsed for Five Stars in the 2011 guide, namely Remhoogte Reserve 2007 and Vergelegen Reserve 2007.

The above is proof once again that making top-end Merlot under South African conditions is extremely difficult and it is quite frankly baffling that the variety retains such a huge popular following. If you want innocuous, drink Shiraz.

Without blowing any vuvuzelas, I’m responsible for nominating both of these 5* merlots, though I’m not at all sure one can read anything into that!
