Last night the launch of the Test Kitchen, new restaurant of acclaimed chef Luke Dale-Roberts located at.the trendy Old Biscuit Mill complex on Albert Road, Woodstock.

Dale-Roberts’s new venture follows a four-year long tenure at La Colombe in Constantia. His departure to start his own operation came as something of a surprise as La Colombe seemed to be flourishing with him in charge, it placing twelfth in the San Pellegrino 50 Best Restaurants of the World Awards 2010 and gaining the title of Acqua Panna Best Restaurant in Africa and Middle East.

Even so, you expect The Test Kitchen will automatically become the hottest dining venue this season. Only 30 seats so put your name on the waiting list now.

To eat last night, mini sausage rolls, deep-fried sushi, tartare on toast as well as pork-belly and pesto chicken done in the outdoor pizza oven and served on skewers. Delicious but low-key: Dale-Roberts confessed that he was up for a party, too.

To drink, wines by Allée Bleue, Bouchard Finlayson, Kleine Zalze and Oak Valley. Good product placement because a lot of Cape Town’s rich and beautiful were there.

The Test Kitchen opens to the public on Wednesday 24 November 2010.
