Trizanne Barnard’s involvement as winemaker at the ambitious Stellenbosch project Anwilka between 2005 and 2008 suggested that here was a winemaker to watch. She subsequently went on her own, mainly producing bulk wine for export but also founding her own Trizanne Signature Wines label. Current releases as follows:
TSW Sauvignon Blanc 2013
Approximate retail price: R85
W.O. Elim, 95% Sauvignon Blanc, 5% barrel fermented Semillon. Notes of lime, white peach and some white pepper on the finish. Obviously cool-climate in its origins but nothing hard or astringent about it – manages to transverse both “green” and “fruity” styles of Sauvignon Blanc.
TSW Reserve Sauvignon Blanc Semillon 2013
Approximate retail price: R155
W.O. Elim, 50% Sauvignon Blanc and 50% Semillon, both portions barrel fermented. Super-intense with notes of blackcurrant and white peach. It has presence rather than weight and the acidity is nicely coated. Seems a bit callow and should show even better 12 months from now.
TSW Syrah Grenache 2013
Approximate retail price: R100
W.O. Swartland, 78% Syrah, 22% Grenache. Red and black fruit, white pepper and spice. Also a hint of reduction but more a point of interest than a flaw. Well balanced and not too polished – a touch of earth and nicely grippy tannins. Heaps of personality and great quality relative to price.
