The 2013 edition of the Best Value Wine Guide sponsored by Ultra Liquors is now available – 80 000 copies have been printed and it will be distributed with Getaway magazine making for impressive reach.
This year, the price ceiling for inclusion in the book was raised from R60 a bottle to R80 a bottle and wines then had to receive a rating of 2½ Stars or better on being tasted by a panel – there were 1 114 submissions of which 549 made the grade (compared to 982 submissions and 380 qualifying wines last year).
Best Value Winery of the Year was Orange River Cellars, joint winner in 2011. There was one wine rated 5 Stars namely KWV Classic Cape Tawny selling for R63 a bottle. A further three wines were rated 4½ Stars namely Alvi’s Drift Chardonnay Viognier 2011 (R34.20), Du Toitskloof Hanepoot Jerepigo 2012 (R42) and KWV Classic Full Cream (R61).
