The 2014 vintage of the Traditional Barrel Fermented Chenin Blanc (R102.50 a bottle) from Stellenbosch farm Villiera placed among the winners of the Standard Bank Chenin Blanc Top 10 Challenge last year but the straight Chenin Blanc 2014 is also pretty smart and extraordinarily good value for money at R48 a bottle.
30% of the wine was fermented in oak but removed immediately afterwards, the entire wine then spending two months on the lees in tank. Also interesting to note that a small portion of botrytis-infected grapes are included in the mix.
The nose shows lime and white peach and whereas six months ago there was a pretty note of honeysuckle, it is already starting to take on a more complex, waxy character. Great fruit concentration matched by tangy acidity before a nicely savoury finish.
