Vrede en Lust Artisan Range Casey’s Ridge Syrah 2013

No excess baggage.

The Buys family of Vrede en Lust acquired Elgin property Casey’s Ridge in 2005 and this now seems to be coming in to its own. The Barrique 2014 scored 91 on the 100-point quality scale in the recent RisCura White Hot Wine Awards and the current-release Artisan Range Casey’s Ridge Syrah 2013 is very good, too.

Matured for 16 months in French oak, 30% new, the nose shows red fruit, an almost Pinot-like muskiness plus white pepper and spice. It’s light and fresh with very fine tannins. At 12.5% alcohol, perhaps a bit underdone but rather that than the other way around. Price: R139 a bottle.

#WinemagRating: 89/100.
