It was my wife’s birthday yesterday and being a woman of healthy appetites, she opted for a celebratory lunchtime steak. HQ restaurant and bar situated on Heritage Square in the Cape Town city centre was the destination. Here the menu is limited to a salad followed by a sirloin steak with café de Paris butter and chips. What to drink with it? We opted for the 2007 vintage of Cabernet Sauvignon from Stellenbosch winery Waterford on the basis that if offered the best quality to price ratio (R245 at the restaurant as opposed to R135 from the cellar). This wine showed optimal ripeness of fruit and tannin making it instantly accessible but not facile – modern in the best sense. The 2006 rated a respectable 3 Stars in the April issue of WINE, and I think the 2007 is even better.
That evening, it seemed wrong to cut short the festivities but deciding what to consume after a piece of cow and a young Cab needed some careful thought. Bubbles in the form of Simonsig Kaapse Vonkel 2005, winner of last year’s Cap Classique Challenge, proved suitably uplifting. Lots of yeasty richness offset by vibrant acidity and about as complete as the stuff gets. The 2008 vintage is available from the cellar at R82 a bottle.
