Eagles' Nest Shiraz 2014

Bird on a wire.

While the 2013 vintage of Shiraz from Constantia property Eagles’ Nest was particularly striking, the currently available 2014 seems more understated.

Matured for 20 months in French oak, a third of which was new, the wine displays aromas of red fruit, white pepper, vanilla and a hint of reduction. It’s medium bodied with pure fruit, fresh acidity and fine tannins. Polished in the best sense, it’s not as severe or angular as some of the more cutting edge examples out there. Wine Cellar price: R285 a bottle.

Editor’s rating: 92/100.

Personally prefer this 2014 to the 2013 in terms of balance, complexity and tannins although it is not as dark fruited as the 2013 which some tasters prefer.

My favourite since 2007/2008, almost reaching those lofty heights
