Most low alcohol wines are insipid so I approached the Villiera Starlight Brut NV – The Light Cap Classique (R95 a bottle) with a fair degree of trepidation. It is, however, an entirely sound proposition.
From 50% Chardonnay, 30% Pinot Noir, 20% Pinotage, a small amount of alcohol was removed prior to secondary fermentation (final abv is 9.62%) and the wine spent 12 months on the lees.
There’s citrus and a vague biscuit character, a fine bubble and bright acidity. Nicely balanced, refreshing and indeed light.
