Announcing Best Value Tastings

Due to popular demand, winemag.co.za will now be convening regular tastings aimed at finding the best wines costing between R60 to R120 a bottle.

While South Africa’s top-end wines are undoubtedly excellent they are very often made in small batches and increasingly demand prices that mean that they must be reserved for special occasions. Our intention is therefore to identify great everyday drinking – wines which offer refreshment and flavour under ordinary circumstances, are widely available and don’t cost too much.

Minimum stock requirement is 300 six-bottle cases or 1800 bottles. Wines will be tasted blind by a three-person panel of experienced judges using the 100-point system.

The schedule for the rest of the year is as follows:

Back to my favorite topic: best value wines.
I am all but a wine connoisseur and aware that this could be a subjective issue but I want to recommend the Spier Ideology Rhône-Style Blend.
At a price point of R79 this wine punches way above its weight.
This wine has a vivid fresh nose and is well structured with some elegance.
I would really appreciate some feedback from more knowledgeable oenophiles.
