Ashbourne Pinotage Cinsault 2017

Fridge red.

Realising that Pinotage has gone largely overlooked by the Young Guns resident in the Swartland, Anthony Hamilton Russell and team have come up with an unwooded Pinotage Cinsault 2017 from that district and its delicious.

An 80:20 blend, it’s an attractive deep purple in colour while the nose shows red cherry, floral fragrance and spice – very primary and very pretty. The palate is marked by lovely fruit expression, nice freshness and no tannins to speak of. The overall impression is savoury rather than the sweet and it’s just very more-ish. Price: R165 a bottle.

Editor’s rating: 89/100.
