Bellingham The Bernard Series Basket Press Syrah 2015

Broad appeal.

What to make of Vivino, the app which offers price comparisons and ratings for just about any wine and has to date attracted 23 million users?

Bellingham thinks it’s a pretty big deal – the Bernard Series Syrah 2013 from this producer  currently having 232 Vivino ratings to its name, the average rating being 4.2 stars, this apparently enough for it to be officially considered as one of the Top 10 Shirazes from South Africa (read our review here). The most interesting article we’ve read on Vivino so far was on JancisRobinson.com which reveals that the city with the most active users of all is São Paulo where the app is a favourite of yuppies who want instant wine knowledge (see here).

The recently released 2015 will in all probability also do well on Vivino as it’s luxuriously styled – 98% Shiraz  and 2% Viognier, co-fermented in open 500-litre barrels before 12 months of maturation in barrique. A hint of reduction on the nose before red and black berries as well as pepper and spice. The palate meanwhile has a particularly glossiness about it – succulent fruit, fresh acidity and smooth tannins (a RS of 4.5g/l definitely adding to weight and mouthfeel). Price: R220 a bottle.

Editor’s rating: 91/100.
