As featured in the May issue of Business Day WANTED: Beyers Truter, previously of famed Stellenbosch property Kanonkop and now solely devoted to Beyerskloof in the same district, is fond of the following anonymous quotation: ““Pinotage is the juice extracted from women’s tongues and lion’s hearts. After having a sufficient quantity one can talk forever and fight like the devil”.

If any of that is true, then the Diesel Pinotage 2009 should be treated with extreme care for this is as potent and imposing as wines from this variety ever get. Diesel, named after a favourite, now deceased dog of Truter’s, is the flagship wine of Beyerskloof. Matured for 23 months in all-new French oak, only the best 20 barrels of the 2009 were selected. A wine of quite extraordinary richness and concentration, it shows flavours of red and black fruit, subtle chocolate and spice. For all its size, it nevertheless has great poise and has to be considered a very serious offering, one which will definitely reward cellaring – best drinking to be expected from 2019 to 2021 (score: 17/20). Price per bottle: R450. For more information, call 021 865 2135.
