Bonnievale Barrel Select new releases

By , 13 February 2018

Bonnievale Wines is situated just outside the town from which it gets its name, some 35km from Robertson. The Barrel Select range consists of a Shiraz and a Cab Sauv, matured in new oak barrels for approximately 15 to 18 months. “We produce only 5000 litres of each – seeing that we are a 22 million-litre company, this is really a special selection for us,” says head winemaker Marthinus Rademeyer. Tasting notes and ratings as follows:

Bonnievale Barrel Select Shiraz 2015
Price: R100
Red fruit, vanilla, spice and white pepper on the nose. Medium bodied with fresh acidity and fine tannins. Technically correct but no great depth of fruit and rather simple.

Editor’s rating: 85/100.

Bonnievale Barrel Select Cabernet Sauvignon 2015

Honest-to-goodness.

Bonnievale Barrel Select Cabernet Sauvignon 2015
Price: R100
Red and black fruit and some fynbos on the nose. Good structure – pure fruit, fresh acidity and fine tannins, the finish nicely savoury. Unpresuming but entirely likeable.

Editor’s rating: 87/100.
