Boschendal Appellation Series Elgin Sauvignon Blanc 2018

Boschendal

Committed to Elgin.

Some 35% of the approximate 750ha under vineyard in Elgin is planted to Sauvignon Blanc and while the variety generally performs exceptionally well in the district, it tends not to demand a premium. Producer-wholesaler DGB, however, is aiming high, its Appellation Series Elgin Sauvignon Blanc 2018 under the Boschendal label having a recommended retail price of R320 a bottle.

Grapes come from a vineyard planted at 500m above sea level, making it one of the highest in the area. Winemaking involved a 15% portion spending two months in oak while 10% Semillon was also included in the final wine.  The nose shows pear, white peach and a touch of hay while the palate is lean in the best sense with fresh acidity and a pithy finish – balanced and detailed, this will please aficionados of the variety. Alcohol: 12.5%.

Editor’s rating: 93/100.
