Cape Rock White 2015

Solid as.

With each sip of Cape Rock White 2015, it became increasingly difficult to believe that this was a wine which cost a mere R120 a bottle. From a Vredendal vineyard, it’s a field blend of 42% Viognier, 33% Grenache Blanc and 25% Roussanne, fermentation occurring spontaneously and maturation lasting five months in old 300-litre barrels.

On the nose, citrus, apple and peach plus a hint of flowers and some spice. The palate, meanwhile, possesses good weight and texture offset by fresh acidity. It’s a flamboyant wine being rich and flavourful but equally it’s well balanced and the overall impression is savoury rather than sweet. Delicious!

#WinemagRating: 93/100.

@Kwispedoor: will ask Gavin and Willie March 4 when I will visit the new cellar. But a joint effort seems likely 😉

@Angela: there sure is Asylum White 2015 (100% Chenin Blanc) and Amnesty Red Blend (Syrah 78%, Mourvèdre 10%, Grenache 7%, Carignan 3%, Viognier 2%)

Gavin is Young Gun and he makes the wines. Willie growes the grapes. Love this 2015, much fuller and riper then 2014 but very well balanced.

Are you sure, Udo? I think the winemaking might be more of a joint effort, perhaps? Platter’s lists Willie as the cellarmaster and both of them as winemakers. Gavin lives in the Cape, far from the cellar in Vredendal. When I tasted with Willie, he jokingly said that Gavin THINKS he makes the wine, but that you can’t really make wine over the phone. 🙂

I think it might be the case that many think only Gavin makes the wine, but perhaps Oom Willie could also get a little more credit?

Anyways, I guess I don’t know enough about exactly who does what over there but regardless of that, they’re doing a damn fine job!

I really enjoyed their 2013 GRV, as well as the more naturally made Asylum White and Amnesty Red Blend. Does anyone know if they’re still making the asylum and amnesty range? And wether they’re still adopting a very natural(minimal) approach in the cellar? I remember his son being quite involved here.

I’ve tasted them in December, Lloyd, but I can’t say for sure whether they will be produced past the current vintage. They were still made naturally (and tasted thus).

    Big fan of these wines.

That 2015 is quite different from the 2014, but it is an absolute stonker! Oom Willie could be mistaken for a Young Gun if you go by the taste of his wines.
