Cederberg Five Generations Chenin Blanc 2014

Impeccably crafted.

God is in the detail, or so the saying goes, and the 2014 vintage of Five Generations Chenin Blanc from Cederberg is nothing if not intricate in its assembly – 10.6% Chenin Blanc for extra complexity, 5% unwooded Chenin from the 2015 vintage for extra freshness, fermented and matured for 11 months in 400-litre barrels, a third first-fill, a third second-fill and a third third-fill.

On the nose, a top note of hay before citrus and white peach plus the merest hint of lanolin. The palate displays super-concentrated fruit offset by bracing acidity, the finish long and pithy. It’s very youthful and comes across as a little severe now but promises much in years to come. Price: R249 a bottle.

Editor’s rating: 93/100.
