Cirrus Syrah 2015

The sky’s the limit.

Cirrus Wines is a partnership between Jean Engelbrecht of Rust en Vrede in Stellenbosch and the Duncan family of Silver Oak in Napa Valley, California dating from 2003. Engelbrecht’s R-en-V cellarmaster Coenie Snyman oversees winemaking and the 2015 (approximate retail price: R250 a bottle) has the same sophisticated plushness that now marks the wines of that property.

On the nose, a hint of reduction before red and black fruit, black pepper, vanilla and spice. Apparently some Viognier but you wouldn’t have guessed. The palate, meanwhile, has good depth of fruit and fine tannins – flavour packed and polished in the best sense. Alcohol: 14.41%.

Editor’s rating: 92/100.
