André Bruyns

André Bruyns from City on a Hill Wine Company.

André Bruyns, who worked a stint at Rijk’s in Tulbagh, now founds himself assistant winemaker to David and Nadia Sadie in the Swartland. He’s also making his own wine under the City on a Hill label, the first release being a white blend from the 2015 vintage selling for R275 a bottle.

Consisting of 86% Chenin Blanc (from an unirrigated bushvine vineyard planted in 1981), 12% Roussanne and 2% Viognier, juice was fermented spontaneously, maturation lasting 10 months in fourth-fill barrels.

On the nose, subtle notes of yellow and white peach, some yellow earth dustiness plus yeasty character. The palate has lovely dimension, which is to say possess both breadth and depth without being weighty while the finish is gently savoury. A wine of particular understatement, which draws you back to the glass again and again to explore its nuances.

#WinemagRating: 91/100.

For the past two years I have really enjoyed the “bushvine chenins”,always looking for one I really like and can hold itself against my redwine snobbish friends. Andre’s wine really does it for me. There nothing I dislike. Complex and full bodied. I was surprised at how quickly a few of us finished the bottle…..

Really looking forward to the release. Heard many good stuff of the wine and the wine maker.

I’ve tasted Andre’s wine and was pleasantly surprised. It is a fine wine with excellent body and aromas. The best I’ve tasted in a while. Can’t wait for his 2016 wines. I’m sure it will be equally as good,
