This wine (approximate retail price R105) is a collaborative effort between and winemaker Louis Nel of Louis Wines and chefs Craig Cormack and Bertus Basson, and winemaker Louis Nel. Look out for the hidden suitcase on the label – think Afrikaans and you’ll aprreciate the homage to the wine that has most famously featured Cinsaut over the years.
Wine of origin Stellenbosch, the wine is entirely unwooded. It shows cherries, plums and strawberries as well as vague fynbos and earthy notes on the nose while the palate is rich and dense with moderate acidity and soft tannins. It’s uncomplicated but still satisfying and yet another example of why it’s time to take this variety seriously again. Serve with spaghetti carbonara.
