Craven Faure Vineyard Syrah 2015

Tight rope act.

If the 2014 vintage of Faure Vineyard Syrah from Mick and Janine Craven was “skinny like a model”, the 2015 has a bit more flesh on the bones and is altogether more likeable.

Fermented whole-bunch and matured for some 10 months in predominantly 500-litre barrels plus a few 225-litre barriques, all old of course, the nose shows red and black fruit, lavender, white pepper and spice. The palate is light and fresh as you’d expect from a wine with an alcohol of 12.5% but certainly isn’t dilute or too stemmy – in fact, there’s a proper and quite winning vinosity about it. Approximate retail price: R195 a bottle.

#WinemagRating: 92/100.
