Dalla Cia Pinot Noir 2013

The maiden vintage Pinot Noir 2011 from the renowned Giorgio Dalla Cia was serious and demanding, perhaps too much so. He declined to release a 2012 and now the 2013 is upon us, the wine showing more charm and elegance than the 2011 at the same stage, at least to my mind.

From a 15-year-old Polkadraai Hills block planted to clone 777, it was matured for 18 months in 100% new French oak – some six months longer in barrel than the 2011 and this evidently has helped integration.

The nose is as beguiling as you’d hope from Pinot. Cherries, musk, red roses, vanilla, spice and smoke. It’s really fresh and juicy on entry before the firm but fine tannins kick in, providing a spicy, almost peppery sensation.

What I like about the wine is that it combines lovely fruit definition with plenty of structure which is often absent in other local examples of the variety. Difficult to resist now but should be even better in two years’ time. Approximate retail price: R590 a bottle.

    Jeepers. I bought the maiden at a very steep (but worth it) R350 per bottle. R590 is more than just a bit too much, considering that Bouchard Pere et fils Gevrey-Chambertin can be had locally for R480.

    I fondly remember many fantastic Meerlust Pinots made by Giorgio in the eighties and nineties, enough so that the idea of any serious Pinot made by him fills me with excitement. At just on R600 per bottle, it’s sad that many aficionados and fans will never get to enjoy this wine. On the one hand it’s nice to see when good wine pays back its maker, but on the other it’s sad that the wine will only ever be enjoyed by rich people (the same goes for all expensive wine the world over).

    The Dalla Cia Pinot Noir can hardly be viewed as a bargain but what they are doing is positioning themselves as global players – R600 a bottle starts buying you decent Burgundy. The market will decide pretty quickly whether or not what’s in the bottle stacks up.
