Not to be trifled with.

The Cape Vintage Reserve 2016 from De Krans in Calitzdorp is monumental. A blend of 74% Touriga Nacional, 18% Tinta Barocca and 8% Tinta Roriz, it was matured in vat for 20 months. Drunk over a good few days, it initially appeared quite closed on the nose and very dense on the palate with firm, grippy tannins. Over time, however, it opened up to reveal top notes of flowers and fynbos before black and blue fruit, cocoa powder, liquorice and spice. For all its power, it’s beautifully balanced and should last a long, long time. Alcohol: 19.26%.

Editor’s rating: 94/100.
