Decanter World Wine Awards 2013 – SA’s International Trophy Winners

The international trophy winners at this year’s Decanter World Wine Awards were recently announced. The following South African wines featured:

Best Dry Aromatic under £15 – Paul Cluver Gewurztraminer 2012
Best Red Rhône Varietal under £15 – Boschendal Reserve Collection Shiraz 2011
Best Sauvignon Blanc over £15 – David Nieuwoudt Ghost Corner Sauvignon Blanc 2012
Best White Blend over £15 – Cape Point Vineyards Isliedh 2012

    I was most excited to hear how well the Ghost Corner & Isliedt had fared at Decanter. They are in fact 2 of my all-time favourite SA wines. But the Boschendal Reserve Shiraz? That left me somewhat stunned. I found it over-ripe, lacking in focus & structure & simply altogether unappealing. I was a tad surprised. I have tasted far better-made SA & Oz Shirazes in that price bracket. Granted the Boschendal would appeal to a certain segment of the market, but I did not think it deserving of a trophy.

      Hi Cornelia, Wine competitions will always be with us. My feeling is that what we should look for general trends rather than treat a single rating of an individual wine as absolute. Fairly partial to Isliedh myself…
