Delheim Pinotage Rosé 2015

Pair with a smoked salmon sarmie.

Should wine commentary be more populist? More rosé? More top 10 winelands picnic spots? My contention is that broad-base lifestyle media provides this kind of information more than adequately so no need for a website dedicated to fine wine to duplicate it.

The problem with rosé for me is not that it’s generally bad but rather utterly, utterly innocuous. I opened a few samples last night and only one really made an impression, namely the Delheim Pinotage Rosé 2015 (approximate retail price: R57 a bottle).

It’s a blend of 96% Pinotage and 4% Muscat de Frontignan and has a smart analysis: abv 12.5%, RS 5g/l, TA 6.1g/l and pH 3.24.

Red cherries, strawberries and dried herbs on the nose while the palate shows good fruit concentration and bright acidity. A perky little drop.

Winemag rating: 85/100.

    Hi Christian

Although I agree with you on the innocuousness of many rose, there are a few worth looking out for. For me the ones I enjoy most lean towards lighter red wines rather than rose. Not sure if you’ve tried any of these, but look out for Sijnn Saignee (as usual with any of David’s wines, not a wimpy wine!); Newton Johnson Mrs M Rose (the elegance of their Pinots, but in an even lighter style) and the Keermont Sweetwater Rose. Perhaps these might change your opinion on the category a bit.
