DeMorgenzon Maestro White 2012

Virtuoso performance.
Virtuoso performance.

At DeMorgenzon in Stellenbosch, baroque music is continuously played to the vines. Make of that what you will, the wines with Carl van der Merwe incumbent as winemaker since mid-2010 are increasingly impressive. I encountered the Maestro White 2012 recently and thought it was a particularly stylish offering (price: R125).

A blend of 31% Chenin Blanc, 24% Chardonnay, 23% Roussanne and 22% Viognier, it has a subtle nose and palate – white and yellow stone fruit , some pineapple, hints of spice. Concentrated, pure fruit and great freshness, the oak carefully judged.

Score: 93/100.
