Pongrácz is one of Distell’s bubbly brands and Desiderius Pongrácz is the flagship in the range, the recently released 2009 selling for R449 a bottle.

A blend of 60% Chardonnay, 40% Pinot Noir, this typically spends a minimum of 72 months on the lees. The nose shows citrus, apple and peach, some brioche and a touch of earthy evolved character. The palate is particularly rich, the mousse quite soft – very well crafted but not as thrilling as some of the other top-end MCCs that are out there.

Editor’s rating: 90/100.

Completely agree with Hennie. It’s also a rather ‘old-fashioned’ bubbly. And can one take that “perfume” bottle seriously!

Interesting pricing considering that I can buy some pretty good champagne for around the same price and some of the best MCC comes in at half that.
