Diemersdal Pinotage Reserve 2018

By , 29 November 2019

Do me a solid.

The Pinotage Reserve 2018 from Diemersdal in Durbanville is highly decorated – among the winners in this year’s Absa Top 10 competition and 5 Stars in Platter’s – and it does appear to tick all the boxes…

Grapes from 45-year-old bush vines, maturation lasted 16 months in French oak, 40% new. The nose has an overlay of floral perfume before ripe berry fruit plus hints of vanilla, earth and spice. The palate, meanwhile, is sweet and juicy with bright acidity, the extraction carefully managed to affect a smoothness of tannin. For me, it’s a perfectly respectable take on the variety but not thrilling or profound. Price: R160 a bottle.

CE’s rating: 90/100.
