If you like you’re a wine drinker prepared to deviate from the mainstream, then you should definitely check out what Craig Sheard is doing under his Elemental Bob label. He has now expanded his range to include five wines dubbed the “Retro Series”, tasting notes and scores for the three whites as follows:

Elemental Bob Retro Series Chenin Blanc 2016
Price: R135
Grapes sourced from Darling, Durbanville and Wellington. Fermented for three days on the skins before 10 months maturation in old oak. Deep in colour, the nose shows naartjie, yellow peach and apple plus dried flowers and spice, honey and a little nuttiness. Full and broad on the palate with tangy acidity and a pithy finish. Total production: 3000 bottles.

Elemental Bob Retro Series Grenache Blanc 2016
Price: R220
86% Wellingon Grenache, 14% Hemel-en-Aarde Valley Verdelho. Fermented for three days on the skins before 10 months maturation in old oak. A top note of dried herbs before pear, white peach and a hint of lime. Medium bodied with particularly fresh acidity and very savoury, amost salty finish. Total production: 1 440 bottles.

Elemental Bob Retro Series White 2016
Price: R135
44% Chenin Blanc, 22% Semillon, 18% Viognier, 11% Roussanne and 5% Verdelho. Fermented for three days on the skins before 10 months maturation in old oak. Pear, lemon, orange and peach plus some yeasty complexity on the nose. Light bodied with lovely fruit definition. Layers of flavour and a long, dry finish.
