Cape Town advocate and garagiste winemaker Donald Ackerman now has a second practice in George, which might well be taken as a commitment to the merits of the Cape South Coast for producing grapes.

Bewitching.

Flying Cloud Witch of the Wave 2016 is his current-release white blend (price: R275 a bottle), consisting of 60% Sauvignon Blanc and 40% Semillon, both components fermented and matured for 10 months in barrel. The nose shows top notes of acacia and elderflower before citrus, peach and sea-breeze along with hints of vanilla and spice while the palate is super-concentrated with driving acidity before a salty finish. It’s a well-honed, impressively forceful wine. Alcohol: 13%.

Editor’s rating: 92/100.
