When do modern-era South African reds peak? When I tasted Aeon Syrah 2008 from Haskell in Stellenbosch two years ago, I thought it was somewhat unapproachable and “in need of some bottle maturation”. A bottle last night was impressive but at the same time pretty much good to go.
A potent wine with dense red and black fruit and massive amounts of spice (coriander seed, pepper). Rich but with a slight briny quality to offset this. Tannins flattening out thanks to time in bottle but still lending some shape and form. Really enjoyable paired with mushroom risotto but I didn’t have any conviction that it was going to get any better. Analysis, for interest’s sake, as follows: Abv 14.47%, RS 2.4 g/l, TA 6.1g/l and pH 3.76.
